چکیده

We present experimental results from a broad investigation of intrinsic preferences for information. We examine whether people prefer negatively skewed or positively skewed information structures when they are equally informative, whether people prefer Blackwell more informative information structures, and how individual preferences over the skewness and the degree of information relate to one another. The wide scope of our investigation not only reveals new insights regarding intrinsic preferences for information, but as we show, also allows for testing of existing models in this domain. We find that models based on the framework of Kreps and Porteus (1978) and Caplin and Leahy (2001), are the most consistent with the data we observe. ∗We thank the Michigan Institute for Teaching and Research in Economics, Ross School of Business Faculty Grant Fund, and the University of Oxford John Fell Fund for support. Are Preferences for Skewness fixed or Fungible

Are individual preferences for skewness fixed or fungible? Using preference reversals as a case study, we find evidence that preferences remained stable as reversals disappear due to arbitrage across both market-like and non-market contexts. Todd L. Portfolio Performance Evaluation in a Modified Mean-Variance-Skewness Framework with Negative Data

The present study is an attempt toward evaluating the performance of portfolios using mean-variance-skewness model with negative data. Mean-variance non-linear framework and mean-variance-skewness non- linear framework had been proposed based on Data Envelopment Analysis, which the variance of the assets had been used as an input to the DEA and expected return and skewness were the output. C...

Institutional Skewness Preferences and the Idiosyncratic Skewness Premium∗

This study examines whether idiosyncratic skewness preferences of institutional investors influence stock returns. On aggregate, institutions exhibit an aversion for idiosyncratic skewness but prefer systematic skewness, and in the cross-section, larger (smaller) and more (less) diversified institutions exhibit stronger (weaker) aversion for idiosyncratic skewness. The aggregate institutional p...

Do Deviations from Investor Tastes Signal Informed Trading?

This paper provides a novel method for identifying informed institutional trading by conditioning on investors’ tastes. Given an information signal about a stock, an investor’s tastes for certain characteristics of that stock can influence his decision to trade. Thus, trades which deviate from an investor’s tastes are more likely to reflect information. I test this hypothesis with respect to in...

Utility functions predict variance and skewness risk preferences in monkeys.

Utility is the fundamental variable thought to underlie economic choices. In particular, utility functions are believed to reflect preferences toward risk, a key decision variable in many real-life situations. To assess the validity of utility representations, it is therefore important to examine risk preferences. In turn, this approach requires formal definitions of risk. A standard approach i...
